The Firefly utilises the reflectance of sunlight during the daylight hours & luminescent light emissions during dusk and nighttime hours.

This sparkling and refraction of light allows birds to change their flight pattern to divert around the marked wires and avoid collisions. The rotational speed of the Firefly also acts as a diverter and scares off the birds. The Snap-Fast clamp holds securely on conductors from 6-70mm OD and can be easily attached from the ground using a hot stick and an application tool.

Birds are most vulnerable to collisions with wires during sunset and sunrise hours, especially during bad weather. That is why Summit Power’s Firefly is so important due to their glow which can be seen in both static and active wind conditions.

  • Do overhead powerline markers need to be installed by hand?

All of our markers feature a special quick clip system that allows installation from a distance, ensuring safety for workers.

With Summit Power’s specialist application tool fixed to a hot stick, warning flags can be attached LIVE to power lines either from the ground or by using a bucket truck or cherry picker.

  • How far apart should markers be installed on powerlines?

We recommend Firefly bird diverters be installed approximately every 6 metres and Birdmark Afterglow diverters around every 3-5m.

For powerline marker balls, refer to the relevant aviation warning standards in your area.

  • How do bird diverters work at night?

Birds are most at risk of wire collisions at dawn and dusk, especially in poor weather. The Firefly helps reduce this risk with a visible moving shape during the day and an after-dark glow that remains effective in still or windy conditions. Its ultraviolet light is largely invisible to humans but creates a hazing effect that encourages birds to avoid the area.

  • How long do safety markers last when installed?

Most markers are designed to be highly durable and permanent, and not degrade under prolonged exposure and severe weather conditions. Our warning flags however are best for temporary applications and can last up to 2 years depending on the severity of the elements in which they are installed.

  • How do I know your bird diverters will work?

Summit Power has partnered with leading Swedish manufacturer Hammarprodukter to bring the best-performing range of bird diverters to the Australian market. Long-term field studies with TasNetworks have shown both the Birdmark Afterglow and Firefly to be effective in reducing the death of raptors, such as wedge-tailed eagles and goshawks.
